Project Brief:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The Provincial Govt through Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) is striving to provide electricity to the people living in far flung Off grid areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on fast-track basis. To materialize this effort the Government of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has started construction of Mini Micro Hydro Power Projects (MMHPPs) which are indigenous and cheap resource of supplying un-interrupted electricity primarily in off grid and load shedding hit areas across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Based on the fruitful results of the Flag ship Phase-I project MMHPPs in which 316 projects of cumulative capacity of 29MW have been constructed and very high community demand, the development of further MMHPPs under Phase-II has been initiated across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by the Government with the financial assistance of Asian development Bank. The water resources i.e. streams\/tributaries and Canals available in project areas are the potential sources of energy and these sources can be best exploited by constructing Mini Micro Hydropower Schemes which have the following benefits;<\/span><\/p>

  1. Mitigation of CO2<\/sub> emissions\/Carbon credits.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  2. Avoiding deforestation\/tree cutting for fuel material (heating\/cooking purpose).<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  3. Clean & Green energy at very affordable rates.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  4. Sustainable supply of electricity and serve as a catalyst for development of basic industry.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  5. Employment opportunities and Growth\/uplift of socio-economic conditions of the targeted population.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

  6. Community empowerment and self-reliance.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    Current Status:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

    Project comprises of total 15 lots (301 projects having almost 50MW capacity). So far PEDO has completed Procurement process of EPC Contractor hiring in 9 lots, comprising of total 143 projects with combined capacity of 27.25 MW while the award of remaining scope of work (158 projects 22.75 MW) is remaining.<\/span><\/p>

    • Detailed surveys and site identification: 100%<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • Feasibility and design reports: 15%<\/span><\/p><\/li>

    • Land acquisition through community mobilization: 85%<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      Challenges Faced During Implementation:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

      • The project area being spread across the province having widely scattered projects.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Due to remote location and harsh terrains, project monitoring and control for multiple projects at the same time became very difficult.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • The scheme consists of carrying out individual feasibility studies separately for each project including arrangement of land free of cost by mobilizing the said community for that where the project lies. This job is hectic and time consuming as in single project, a lot of people land were involved and sometime one or more than one land owner(s) was\/were not agreeing, resulting delay in project implementation.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Climate change impacts in far flung northern areas in the form of severe weather issues, flash floods, snow avalanches etc effect the projects.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Non availability of local low head turbine manufactures with acceptable efficiency.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Local manufacturers rely on obsolete technology of cross flow turbine having efficiency issues.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Missing policy level and unavailability of standardization\/specifications approved by relevant government authorities.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

      • Lack of good repair and maintenance facilities for customers in remote locations by the manufacturers.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>

        Challenges Faced Recently:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

        • Frequent Funds stoppage by Finance Dept. leading to adverse effects on project.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

        • PC-I Revision awaiting PDWP Approval.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

        • NOC from irrigation department & Environment Dept.<\/span><\/p><\/li>

        • Rehabilitation of completed projects damaged by devastating floods during August – September 2022.<\/span><\/p><\/li>
