Brief:
The Balakot Hydropower Project is located on Kunhar
River, in the Kunhar valley, in District Mansehra of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Province. The Project has been proposed on the left bank of 9 km
intermediate part of Kunhar River from Paras to Sangarh village. The dam site
on Kunhar River is about 18 km upstream of Balakot town main bridge. The
Powerhouse is to be located on the left bank of Kunhar River 1 km upstream of
Dabrain village and 8 km upstream of Balakot town main bridge. The project
layout including headrace tunnel is proposed on left bank of Kunhar River.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will finance portion
of 300 MW Balakot Hydropower Project’s cost. The total cost of the project is
estimated as 750 Million USD, wherein ADB had committed to arrange 580 Million
USD.

Objectives:
The main objective of
construction of the Balakot Hydropower Project is to develop low cost
hydropower and to provide more reliable and consistent power to local areas and
the National Grid keeping in view the present severe power shortage and future
requirements for industrial, agricultural and economic development of the
country.
The project will provide
the economical, renewable and environment friendly power. This project will
contribute towards the present and future power requirements of Pakistan,
especially rural and remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The energy generated by
this project shall be sold to Distribution Company, PESCO/ NTDC.
Benefits:
Balakot HPP will generate Mean Annual
Energy of 1143 GWh and will earn Net Profit of 23 Million US $/Annum.
